MimicAudio: an AI-powered VST3 synthesizer plugin

MimicAudio is a Windows VST3 synthesizer built for a music-software client. Alongside a full synthesis engine and an effects chain, its AI tab analyses any audio file with FFT-based harmonic analysis and rebuilds the sound as four ready-to-use patches.

Why we built it

Producers often hear a sound they want to recreate but have no quick way to turn it into a patch on their own synth. MimicAudio closes that gap: load an audio file, let the plugin analyse it, and start from four patches that already approximate the sound.

MimicAudio is a professional VST3 synthesizer plugin built for a music-software client. It pairs a full synthesis engine with an AI timbre-matching engine that listens to an audio file and rebuilds its sound as ready-to-use synthesizer patches.

What we built

4 systems, feature by feature

01

SYNTH engine

The core three-oscillator synthesizer voice.

Live
  • Three oscillators
Sine, triangle, sawtooth, square and noise, mixed per voice.
  • Multi-mode filter
    Low-pass, high-pass and band-pass with resonance.
  • AHDSR envelopes
Attack, hold, decay, sustain and release shaping per voice.
  • Dual LFOs
Two low-frequency oscillators for movement and modulation.
  • 8-voice unison
Stacked voices with detune and stereo spread for a wide sound.
02

FX chain

A built-in effects chain after the synth voice.

Live
  • Reverb and delay
    Space and echo for depth.
  • Chorus and distortion
    Width and drive.
  • Parametric EQ and compressor
    Tone shaping and dynamics control.
03

AI audio analysis

The feature the plugin is named for: analyse a sound, rebuild it as patches.

Live
  • FFT-based harmonic analysis
A 4,096-point FFT with Hann windowing reads the frequency spectrum of any audio file.
  • Waveform detection
Odd/even harmonic ratios, crest factor and harmonic SNR classify the sound as sine, triangle, saw, square or noise.
  • Four matched presets
Generates Accurate, Warm, Bright and Layered patches with matched filter and envelope settings.
  • Any sample rate
Handles 44.1 kHz up to 192 kHz with automatic downsampling, on a background thread so the UI never blocks.
04

Playing and presets

Everything needed to audition and keep sounds.

Live
  • On-screen piano
A built-in keyboard to audition sounds without a MIDI controller.
  • Preset system
Save and recall a full patch, including the FX chain.

How it is built

The plugin is written in C++ on the JUCE 8 framework and ships as a Windows VST3. Synthesis runs in real time: polyphonic voices with FM modulation, oscillator sync, and up to eight unison voices with detune and stereo spread.

The AI tab is the signal-analysis core. A 4,096-point FFT with Hann windowing turns any audio file into a frequency spectrum. From that spectrum the engine computes odd/even harmonic ratios, a spectral crest factor and a harmonic signal-to-noise ratio, and uses them to classify the sound as sine, triangle, sawtooth, square or noise. It then generates four matching presets — Accurate, Warm, Bright and Layered — with filter cutoff and envelope settings chosen to fit the detected timbre.

Details that mattered

Analysis never blocks playback: audio files are processed on a background thread so the interface stays responsive. Sound from 44.1 kHz up to 192 kHz is handled, with automatic downsampling before analysis so results stay consistent across sample rates.
